The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern

The Night CircusThe Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern is an enchanting story centered on a young girl and boy, Celia and Marco, who are unknowingly bound together. Their mentors have each entered these “special” children into a magical challenge that plays out over the course of their lives. The arena for this challenge is none other than a night circus, a traveling group that shows up unannounced across the globe.

The circus becomes completely intertwined with the challenge, filled with tents full of magic and fantastical illusions. Morgenstern did a good job of illustrating the challenge with stunning descriptions that help the reader imagine the unknown.

Along with these magical enchantments, I was drawn into this story because of the wacky characters with their bizarre, and sometimes stunning, acts. For me, this wasn’t a page gripping book, but it was very well written and I was intrigued all the same.

Another twist to the story comes when these challengers start developing feelings for each other…Will they fight to the finish or will love triumph all? You’ll just have to pick up The Night Circus to find out!

  1. I felt like the marketing for this book was just a load of false advertising. I loved Morgenstern’s vivid imagery, it was so lush and made me feel like I was in the circus. It even made me want to go to a circus, but the story wasn’t as “gripping” and the romance wasn’t as “passionate” as had been touted. I didn’t like that the rules were never really explained and that the main characters just had to deal with that. As much as I rooted for Marcos, I also didn’t really get how he had fallen in love. It was cute, but how? He never saw her. What are your thoughts?

    1. I totally agree with you that this one isn’t a very “gripping” book. I hadn’t heard of it before reading it so I didn’t know what to expect, but I definitely stuck with it because of the imagery and magical circus acts. I was hoping that it would be more of a page-turner, and I thought the romance was very drawn out, but I did enjoy the ending. I’m glad that Bailey got to become a part of the circus!

  2. I really enjoyed this book, probably because of the imagery. In fact, I have it digitally now and I want to buy it in a print version. Plus I need to reread it. It has been too long!
I had heard they were supposed to make it into a movie, but whenever I have checked there are no updates.

    1. This would be a great one to listen to as an audiobook, what a good idea for a road trip! Thank for the nomination, it means a lot! I will do my best to find some time to do it 🙂
